The Highland House Color Scheme

Now that we’re finally (almost) down to putting in the finishes at the Highland House (aka "#therecanbeonlyonehighlandhouseproject ) I thought it would be a fine time to show you what I have selected for the color scheme of the remodel. And how fun to do this in a series? If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook it’s likely that you’ve been VIP treated to sneak peeks of some of these selections already. If you’re late to the game, I’ve been working on a personal project at Stauffer Design Co. In June, I purchased a home in a local gated community and hopefully within the next couple of months it will be back on the market. You can read more about the purchase and what my plans were here and the to- do list I made for myself in the beginning here.

I’ll start this series with some color palettes of the key areas of the home. The entire house is being remodeled, but the color scheme throughout is organic and neutral with some expected pops of rich color. The main living spaces are painted in an off white with a lovely contrast on the doors, trim, and window casings. Tucked away rooms like the home office and the Jack and Jill (guest bathroom) are areas where I pulled in colors like green and deep black/blue.

Gone are the days where you will see me willingly paint kitchen cabinets. Though our kitchen cabinets were given new life recently by Alex at Brushworks 417, I just don’t love the painted look as much as I did in the past. I’ve done them, I’ve had them, I will be pro wood cabinets from here on out. While I still see very pretty painted cabinets, I think there is nothing like the beauty of wood grain. The kitchen in The Highland House is going to be a clear coat white oak and I can’t wait to see all the lines and texture they have to offer.

the primary bathroom

Like the kitchen, the bathroom will have the same white oak cabinetry in both the his and hers vanity and linen cupboard. Some millwork coated in a greigey paint color will warm up the room. The floors are going to be so beautiful in a blue toned slate, and the zellige tile in the large shower is a shiny happy griege as well.

This is where a little fun happens. While the walls and trim are the same scheme as the rest of the house, the floor is a lively green & gray checkerboard pattern. There is plenty of personality to be had with the selections of this room. Whether it ends up as a kids space or just a guest room for visitors the Jack and Jill suite is going to leave a lasting impression.

I sooooo badly wanted to paint this office green, but since green was already spoken for in the Jack and Jill bathroom and the laundry room (the laundry cabinets were already painted green and I chose to leave this room as is), I felt I’d better venture to something else. I considered the beautiful deep maroonish red that Chris Loves Julia featured in their previous home’s music room, but it didn’t feel right for this room. I kept finding myself drawn to Farrow and Ball’s Downpipe and ended up finding a similar color to it but one that leaned a little more on the blue side. This room is going to be ultra special as it will be painted in tone on tone. Tone on tone is my very biggest obsession at the moment; and is where the walls are one color and the trim is either a shade or two darker or the same color but a different sheen. I can’t wait for you to see this!
