How to Fully Prepare Yourself for Your Home Renovation

From a designer's standpoint, there's nothing better than seeing the excitement on clients’ faces when they see the plans and selections for their renovation. Having a designer help you set an appropriate budget, narrow down the choices, and plan for the best use of your spaces is the best way to begin your renovation.

A renovation done right will ensure that you wake up every morning in love with the space you're living in, that your home serves your family, and that it gives you the boost you need to conquer your daily grind.

What is Renovating Really Like?

I've lived in a home during a renovation (with tiny kids on top of that), and it's not what I would call fun. Life is chaotic as it is— throw dust and materials underfoot, and you can quickly grow impatient. Even though the whole point of a renovation is to improve your life, the hill to climb before it's finished can sometimes feel insurmountable.

At Stauffer Design Co., I am your advocate in making sure budgets are followed (unless you change the scope, I never change the number) and timelines move as seamlessly as possible. We work with properly vetted trades people and schedule a preset number of site visits to keep your project moving.

Stauffer Design Co. knows first hand that living in a home that is being remodeled can be stressful.

Tip #1. Trust Your Designer’s Experience

I love tearing something apart and creating something completely different out of it. But when tearing things down, we sometimes find surprises that we had no way of knowing about. Rest assured, our well vetted trades professionals are here to give you honest solutions to the problem. I'm here to make sure the new solution fits within the design scheme and doesn't delay your project more than necessary.

Tip #2. Temporarily Move Out of the Construction Zone

It's actually a little difficult for home industry professionals to give you a proper service if you're living in your construction zone— not to mention, the mess and harm that can come from a job site. When clients live in their home during their remodel, roles get confused and lines get blurred no matter how hard the designer tries to keep things straight.

Thankfully, we live in the age of nightly rentals, and you now have options for relocating to a comfortable space that’s out of harm's way of the renovation site. In your new temporary home, your only role is to relax. Before beginning your project, invest a little extra in an extended stay in a different location. This will make life for your family so much easier without the constant construction chaos front and center.

The contractor, the painter, the cabinet maker...the crew’s all here, ready to get the job done.

Tip #3. Believe in Your Design

When the remodel gets too tough, take a look at what you've left behind, look at what is yet to come, and revisit your design samples that were provided to you. Seeing the concepts and samples again can renew your confidence. Reach out to your designer and let her know you're feeling overwhelmed, but remember— this has all been meticulously planned and the designer has her finger on the pulse. Keep the faith.
